THE Tweed Byron DBA Senior (Over
60's) Pairs Championship came to a
conclusion recently at Pottsville Club.
In the morning semi-finals (skips only),
Condong's Norm Johnston was too strong
for Cabarita's Ern Carsley, and comfort-
ably triumphed 25-12. Meanwhile, in the
battle of the Murwillumbah clubmates,
the honours went to Mike Bambery, who
overcame Ron Erickson 25-17. The final
between Bambery and Johnston was a
cracker, with neither team giving an inch
as they battled to gain an advantage.
Even at the conclusion of the final end
they could not be separated, and it took
a tight umpire's measure to decide the
winner, with that honour going to Bam-
THE District Major Pairs Championship
was finalised with the decider being
played at Murwillumbah. Pottsville's Greg
Sawtell and Ron Wilson came up against
the Condong duo of Duane Smith and
Brett Rohweder in the final. Wilson won
the event in 2005, along with several
other District championships, in company
with Kris Lehfeldt, and although he had
a new partner in 2010, it was felt that
the Pottsville pair might have the edge
in experience. In the end this proved cor-
rect. The final was a hard-fought affair,
but despite Smith and Rohweder giving
it their all, Sawtell and Wilson reigned
supreme. The Pottsville pair won 22-15 to
give Sawtell his inaugural District title. It
was Wilson's second District Pairs win, a
title that will sit alongside his three Dis-
trict Triples and two District Fours crowns.

YAMBA BC have another District cham-
pion when Keith Moore won the
District Senior singles. In quarter final
action of the seniors, Graham Meany and
Doug Starr both recorded 31-16 victories.
Their opponents were Leo Wood and Bill
James respectively. The semi finals saw
Doug Starr adjust to the change of direc-
tion much quicker than Graham Meany
to record a comfortable 31-17 win. The
second semi was a classic between two
fine bowlers. Keith Moore and Dennis
Firth went shot for shot throughout. The
turning point came late in the game when
Dennis, trying to cover Keith's catchers,
played his own shot bowl onto the jack,
moving it back to Keith's bowls. Keith
made no mistake drawing a fourth and
establishing a winning break. The final
score was 31-24. The final was an even
affair through the first half of the game.
Keith Moore then reverted to long ends
and was able to pick up a number of
multiples to take the match 31-20. Early
action in the Open singles saw Simon
Perkins record an excellent 31-19 victory
over Grafton's Wayne McLeod. Simon
then played a thriller against Greg Maxted
(Grafton). Simon was the first to 30, but
Greg drew a double to snatch a 31-30 vic-
tory. John Collins was in excellent form to
defeat Alan Abbott 31-23. The semi final
saw John make an uncharacteristic slow
start and Greg Maxted play great draw
bowls. John was never able to get back
into the game and went down 18-31. The
final was won by Maclean's Steve Jackson,
who defeated Greg Maxted 31-21 in an
entertaining final. Yamba has had a very
successful run in the District champion-
ships. Besides Keith Moore's win in the
Senior singles, Jamie Eichorn won the
Junior singles. In pairs events, Graham
Meany and Max Googh won the Seniors,
and John Luchetti and John Brown did the
same in the President's Reserve. Victory
also went to Yamba in the triples, with
Simon Perkins, Wayne Curtis and Alan
Abbott getting the job done.
AT GRAFTON, the District Reserve
Singles turned out to be a local derby
between Jay Buckley and Mike Hall. Mike
had experience with another Buckley in
an earlier round. Mike stormed home to
win 31-30 over Bryan Buckley. Now to the
final -- Mike led 25-17, only to feel the
pressure mount as Jay continued to grind
away to be 30-all. Jay hung in to win
31-30, to the delight of a large audience.
