Home' Bowls NSW : AUGUST 2010 Contents 18 BOWLS NSW -- AUGUST 2010
A new challenge
on and off
This month I thought I might
touch on something fairly different
from the normal.
Although it doesn't affect all
of you, in fact, it probably only
relates to not even half directly,
it does at times come into the
equation to everybody.
Want to take a guess? Never
mind that, I'll tell you... It's smok-
ing! (cough, gasp, choke).
For those of you who know
me, yes, I'm a puffer!
Well, at least I used to be.
And if you know me well, you
will also know that I loved them,
couldn't live without them. They
"completed me." They "had me at
hello." I think you get the idea.
So, the reason for this article?
I thought, what the heck, if I can
do it, maybe, just maybe, I could
convert, nag, inspire, convince at
least somebody else to kick the
habit, maybe even a few, maybe
an entire team.
At the time of reading this, I
will be some three months into
my "new life."
are notable. Of
course, the typical
benefits apply ...
Food tastes better,
breathe easier already,
my wife and kids aren't nagging
me about smoking, and the kids
now have to put their own rubbish
in the bin, rather than ditching
my near full packet of bungers
every 10 minutes.
I smell better, both through
my senses and also personally. I
use the ATM machine much less,
as I have more cash in my kick
now, (on average about $120+
per week). Yahoooooo!
I was a machine. I would puff
first thing in the morning, last
thing at night. Struth, I could
even have a smoke in the shower.
(Yeah, that's pretty desperate).
I've got to say though that
I am very proud, no, extremely
proud of myself for getting this
far. I can assure you it's not easy,
but if you're determined, there is
a light at the end of the tunnel.
I'm even eating breakfast these
I have put on a couple kilos,
simply because I have had the
typical increase in appetite, but
that is also easing now, and with
a little exercise, that will go, too!
My secret behind all this? I
have used "doctor prescribed
tablets". (Recommended by my
brother-in-law, who was also a
pathetic, addicted smoker. (No
For the uninitiated, these tablets
are a 3 month course that help
detract from the feeling of want-
ing or needing tobacco.
They do help! Naturally, I've
tried the gum, patches, and lollies.
I've even gone cold turkey.
There are other treatments, such
as hypnotism, laser and acupunc-
ture and any one of these might
work for you if you mean business.
The bottom line is that if you
are hooked, just like I was, it's
You have to be determined, and
below are some of the tricks I have
used to help me through...
• Set yourself goals;
• Have something else in your
hand to take away the "habit"
• Keep yourself busy;
• Eat fruit (I enjoy green apples), or
have a peppermint or something
when the urge is strong;
• If you like a couple of coldies,
back off the drinking for a while;
• Be stubborn;
• Plan to use the money you save
on something special;
• The urge passes in no time;
• Don't let "stupid" people try and
tempt you to light up.
I'm sure you can come up with
your own plan and motivation
without too much trouble.
It's taken me some 20+ years to
finally get my head right and give
this a serious shot.
I highly recommend it to you,
as the benefits totally outweigh
the drawbacks (pardon the pun)!
So go on, make a conscious deci-
sion and beat the habit! Like me,
you will be very proud of yourself.
Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
and let me know how you're doing.
Best wishes, and here's to many
more healthy years...
